The Goreme Open-Air Museum resembles a gigantic monastery complex made up of dozens of refectory monasteries situated next to one another, each with its beautiful cathedral. Given that it is located in the geographic center of Cappadocia and is easily accessible from all directions, it is undoubtedly the first sight any visitor to the area should see. The Goreme village center is only 1.5 km (mile) away by foot. It has the best rock-cut cathedrals, with stunning frescoes (wall paintings) that still have all of their vibrant original freshness. Additionally, it offers distinctive instances of fresco and rock-hewn architecture. One of Turkey's first two UNESCO sites, the Goreme Open Air Museum, has been on the World Heritage List since 1984.

This open-air museum's territory is a unified historical unit and a coherent geographical entity. The Museum has eleven refectories with benches and tables carved out of rock. Each one is connected to a church. Most churches at the Goreme Open Air Museum date from the tenth, eleventh, and twelve centuries.
It is preferable to visit the museum in the summer in the early morning or late afternoon rather than in the middle of the day. The most significant churches and chapels in the Goreme Open Air Museum are:
Nunnery
The "Nunnery" is the 6- to 7-story rock formation to the left of the museum's entrance. You can still tour the first-floor dining room, kitchen, and a few other rooms in addition to the second-floor chapel's ruins. A tunnel leads to the third-floor church with a cruciform layout, a dome with four columns, and three apses. Churches in Goreme rarely have the templon on the central apse. Red decorations can be seen in addition to the fresco of Jesus that is immediately painted on the rock. Tunnels connect the monastery's various floors, and "millstone doors," similar to those seen in underground towns, were used to seal off these tunnels in an emergency.
Open-Air Museum in Goreme
Goreme, a significant Christian hub in the early Middle Ages, is today home to a staggering number of monasteries, churches, and chapels. An exceptional collection of ancient cave churches with striking frescoes from earlier eras are housed in the Open Air Museum.
The Panoramic View of Esentepe
Esentepe, which lies halfway between Uchisar and Goreme, offers visitors a stunning panorama of the town. Visitors can stop and take in the breathtaking scene before continuing on to the next destination along the route as natural fairy chimneys blend with the town's structures.
Monks Valley, Pasabag
The iconic three-headed fairy chimney can best be viewed in Pasabag. Pasabag, popularly known as the Pasha's Vineyard, is surrounded by breathtaking natural rock formations that create a beautiful landscape.
Inverness Valley
The ruins at Devrent Valley are dispersed over three valleys and have numerous pointed fairy chimneys with substantial stems. They are located on the northern slopes of Aktepe, 1 km from Pasabaglari (Monk's Valley) and 5 km from Avanos.
Red River and the Avanos Pottery Workshop
Given how commonplace pottery is in Cappadocia, visiting a traditional pottery workshop is a must-do activity. Since 3000 B.C., Avanos tucked away on a hillside, has served as a hub for terracotta artwork. Both the local economy and the countryside are given life by potters' use of Red River clay.
