Cappadocia was the name of the vast inland region of Asia Minor in ancient geography, today, the Asian part of modern Turkey. The Cappadocia region is the world's most magnificent example of how nature and history can coexist. During the historical era, humanity had carried the signs of thousands of years ago civilizations by cutting houses and churches within these earth pillars and decorating them with frisks, while geographic occurrences were generating amazingly beautiful fairy chimneys.
There are many underground cities in Cappadocia. Many of the underground cities in Cappadocia were utilized by early Christians as hiding places before they were recognized as a legitimate religion. The fourth-century Cappadocian religious figures were crucial to much of the early Christian philosophy. John of Cappadocia, who served as Patriarch of Constantinople from 517 to 520, was among the others in the region. It was mostly unaffected by the hostilities in the region, first with the Sassanid Empire and then against the Islamic expansion led by Arabs, for the majority of the Byzantine era. If you'd like to see these amazing underground cities with your own eyes, you can visit Derinkuyu, Kaymakli, and Ozkonak Underground Cities for free with Cappadocia Travel Pass®.
As a result of its numerous distinctive geological, historical, and cultural qualities, the region is a well-known and well-liked tourist attraction worldwide. The area is located southwest of Kayseri, a significant city with rail and aircraft connections to Ankara and Istanbul. The most popular places in Nevsehir, the neighboring city of Kayseri and it has its own airport also.
Sedimentary rocks from lakes and streams and ignimbrite deposits from ancient volcanoes, which erupted between 9 and 3 million years ago, make up the majority of the region's substructure from the late Miocene to the Pliocene epochs. Hundreds of magnificent pillars and minaret-like structures were eroded from the Cappadocian rocks close to Goreme. The inhabitants of the settlements at the center of the Cappadocia Region chiseled out the soft volcanic deposits to create homes, churches, and monasteries.
Between 300 and 1200 AD, Goreme developed into a monastic center. Goreme's earliest habitation dates to the Roman era when Christianity was present. The mystical side of history is currently carried by a number of churches in Goreme, as well as houses and churches cut into rocks up to Uzundere, Love Valley, and Zemi Valley. The Goreme Open Air Museum, one of the most well-known places in central Turkey, is the monastic communities' most popular destination. It is a complex made up of more than 30 churches and chapels carved out of rock that feature amazing frescoes from the ninth to the eleventh centuries.
